Sustainability at VMF

Creating and executing a large scale event such as our Mount Pleasant Street Party is exhilarating, adrenaline inducing, inspiring, and elevating. Months of hard work and collaboration across countless organizations, companies, and individuals come together into this one day of celebration in the streets of Mount Pleasant. As we enter our 4th year of the festival, we’re initiating more to take into consideration the environmental footprint of the day’s event. We’re proud to be working alongside sustainable partners and collaborators and want to make sure you know how great they are too! Bringing Power to VMF There is so much that goes into bringing power to VMF. Generators, lights, installations, and collaborations would not be possible without the help from Portable Electric . We’ve teamed up with them this year to integrate clean energy into our street party and eliminate using diesel powered generators to lessen the environmental impact. Portable Electric is revolutionizing the way we power our festival and world. Getting to VMF We always encourage biking, walking, or any other form of human powered transportation to our Mount Pleasant Street Party and totally understand that the influx of people on the streets can result in a lack of places to safely and securely lock your bike. As to make sure you’re not discouraged from using your bicycle we’re bringing in a bike valet to keep your wheels protected and out of the way from other Street Party attendees! For those of you coming from a greater distance or with your crew/cohort/family we understand that carpooling is simply the best option. In this instance, we're all for carpooling, it's more fun to drive with company anyway. Grab an Evo Car Share or a Modo and get there safe and hassle free! Miscellaneous Sustainability Actions at VMF If you’ve been to the Mount Pleasant Street Party before then you know there is lots of beer. Using a different cup for each purchased beer would create a senseless amount of waste. To mitigate multiple cup usage we charge a $1 deposit on cups for craft beer and take them back at the end of the day. The cups we use are compostable from BSI bio , so they are brought to the industrial composter where they're chipped and turned into soil by Revolution Recycling . This year we’re excited to have water fountains provided at Main and 10th AND Main and 12th. In addition, a Water Wagon will be provided by Metro Vancouver for people to fill their own water bottles! Murals. Of course, the murals! What about all the paint that’s left over? We do NOT put excess paint down the drain or in the garbage. We have three actions with our waste paint: we either take it to the recycling depots, resell it, or donate it! Despite are actions to prevent it, waste is inevitable at an event this size so we are greatly thankful to the members at Binners’ Project who do rounds collecting recyclable materials throughout the day. Binners positively contribute to our environment by diverting a considerable amount of waste from landfills and truly changing the environmental footprint of Mount Pleasant Street Party.
